Age Calculation — How Exact Age Is Computed

Age calculators count completed years, months, and days separately — not just total days divided by 365. This matters because months have different lengths (28–31 days) and leap years add an extra day in February. The calculation works by finding the last birthday that has already passed, then counting remaining months and days from there.

Age Calculation (DOB: June 15, 1990 → Jan 10, 2040 — example reference date): Years = 2040 − 1990 − (birthday not yet passed this year) = 49 years (Jan 10 is before June 15, so birthday not yet passed) → borrow: years = 49 − 1 = 49 ... wait, Jan < June so birthday NOT passed → years = 49, months = Jan(1) − June(6) = −5, borrow → months = 7, years = 49 → days = 10 − 15 = −5, borrow Dec (31 days) → days = 26, months = 6 Result: 49 years, 6 months, 26 days Also expressed as: Total days: 18,106 Total weeks: 2,586 Total months: 594

Date Difference — Days, Weeks, and Months Between Dates

Date difference is the most straightforward calculation — the result in days is exact. Weeks are days divided by 7 (whole weeks only). Months are approximate because calendar months vary in length; the calculator counts completed calendar months.

Hours Between Two Times — With Break Deduction

The hours calculator finds the time difference between a start and end time, with the option to subtract break time. The result is shown in decimal hours (useful for payroll) and in hours and minutes format (useful for scheduling).

Leap Year Rules — When Does February Have 29 Days?

Leap years add one day to February (29 days instead of 28) to keep the calendar synchronized with Earth's orbit. The rule has three components — a year is a leap year if it meets these conditions:

The rule in plain language: divisible by 4 = leap year, except century years (divisible by 100) are not leap years, unless they're also divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year; 1900 and 2100 are not.

Time Zone Considerations for Date Calculations

These calculators work with calendar dates only — they don't apply time zone offsets. This is correct for most uses (birthdays, contract dates, project deadlines) because those are typically expressed as calendar dates independent of time zone. When time zone differences matter — such as calculating hours between events in different countries — convert both times to the same time zone before entering them.

The international date line (roughly 180° longitude) means that dates can differ by one calendar day across it. A flight departing Tokyo on July 18 at 11 PM and arriving in Los Angeles on July 18 at 3 PM local time has "traveled back in time" by the clock — but the flight duration is still about 10 hours. 5 Date and Time Calculation Tips

  • Age in years alone misses 11 months of possible error. Someone born December 31 and someone born January 1 of the same year are both "the same age" in years — but one is up to 364 days older. The age calculator gives years, months, and days for this reason. For legal or medical purposes where exact age matters (insurance cutoffs, school enrollment, drug dosing), always use the full year-month-day result.
  • From Jan 15, 2000 to Jul 4, 2005 is exactly 1,997 days — not a round 1,825 (5 × 365). The extra days come from 2000 and 2004 both being leap years, plus months of different lengths across the span. When calculating contract durations, deadlines, or interest accrual periods, always use a date calculator rather than estimating by months × 30 or years × 365. The error compounds.
  • Decimal hours are easier for math; HH:MM is easier to read. 8.0 decimal hours is exactly 8h 0m. But 8.75 decimal hours requires the conversion: 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes = 8h 45m. For payroll calculations, always use decimal: 8.75 hours × $18/hr = $157.50. For scheduling and time management, HH:MM is more intuitive.
  • 1900 was not a leap year — this surprises many date calculation algorithms. The century-year exception (÷100 = not leap) catches most people out. A date calculator for any span crossing 1900 must handle this correctly, or it will be off by one day for all dates after February 28, 1900. Similarly, 2100 will not be a leap year — any long-range calculation crossing that year must account for it.
  • For project planning, count working days, not calendar days. A deadline of "30 calendar days" from January 15, 2000 lands on February 14, 2000 — but 30 working days (Monday–Friday, excluding weekends) from that same start date is February 25, 2000. These are very different deadlines. The date calculator gives calendar days; factor in weekends and holidays separately for working-day deadlines.

2024 is a leap year (divisible by 4, not a century year) — February 2024 had 29 days. 2026 is not a leap year (not divisible by 4). The leap year rule: divisible by 4 = leap year, except century years (÷100) are not, unless also divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year; 1900 and 2100 are not.
