What Is a Conversion Calculator?

A conversion calculator translates a value from one unit of measurement to another — feet to meters, pounds to kilograms, Celsius to Fahrenheit, and so on. This one covers eight categories: length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, time, and digital storage. Enter a value in either field and the result appears instantly; the panel below shows your value converted into every unit in that category at once.

Two measurement systems dominate globally. The metric system (SI), used by every country except the United States, Myanmar, and Liberia, is built on base-10 arithmetic — converting kilometers to meters is just multiplying by 1,000. The US Customary system uses different factors for nearly every step: 12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard, 1,760 yards in a mile. Temperature — The Only Conversion With Two Steps

Every other unit conversion in this calculator is a single multiplication or division. Temperature is the exception — the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales have different zero points, so conversion requires both multiplication and an offset. Here are the formulas exactly as this calculator applies them:

Length Conversions

The international inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm, which anchors every other US-to-metric length conversion. All the values below flow from that single definition:

Weight and Mass Conversions

Technically, "weight" is a force (measured in newtons) and "mass" is the quantity of matter (kilograms) — but in everyday use, the terms are interchangeable. All values below are mass conversions at standard Earth gravity:

⚠️ US ton vs UK ton: A US short ton is 2,000 lbs (907 kg). A UK long ton is 2,240 lbs (1,016 kg). A metric tonne is 1,000 kg (2,205 lbs). These three "tons" differ by up to 10% — always confirm which is meant in freight and commodity contracts.

Volume Conversions

Volume has a hidden complication: US and UK gallons are different units with the same name. A US gallon is 3.785 liters; a UK (Imperial) gallon is 4.546 liters — a 20% difference. Fuel economy specs in miles per gallon mean different things on each side of the Atlantic because of this gap:

📌 Oven temperatures (US °F → °C): 325°F = 163°C | 350°F = 177°C | 375°F = 191°C | 400°F = 204°C | 425°F = 218°C | 450°F = 232°C. For fan/convection ovens, reduce by 15–20°C (25–35°F) from any conventional oven temperature.

5 Practical Tips for Unit Conversion

  • Know your gallon — US or UK. A recipe calling for "1 gallon" means something different in London than in Los Angeles. US gallon = 3.785 L; UK gallon = 4.546 L. For fuel economy, 30 MPG (US) ≈ 36 MPG (UK) because the UK gallon is 20% larger. When buying car specs internationally, verify which standard is being used.
  • For rough °C ↔ °F estimates, use the "double and add 30" rule. It's not exact but gets you within 5°F for everyday temperatures: 25°C → double 25 = 50, add 30 = 80°F (actual: 77°F). Good enough to know whether to pack a coat. For body temperature, cooking, and precision work, use the exact formula.
  • US short ton vs metric tonne: a 10% difference that matters in freight. 1 short ton (US) = 2,000 lbs = 907.2 kg. 1 metric tonne = 2,204.6 lbs = 1,000 kg. A commodity contract in metric tonnes vs short tons changes the quantity by about 10%. Always check which unit a contract, shipping manifest, or bulk order is using.
  • Speed conversions between mph and km/h have a useful shorthand. 1 mph ≈ 1.609 km/h, so 60 mph = 96.56 km/h. A rough mental conversion: multiply mph by 1.6. Driving in a metric country at 100 km/h is 62.1 mph — just below a US highway's 65 mph limit. The reverse: divide km/h by 1.6 to get approximate mph.
  • Digital storage: 1,024 not 1,000. Storage uses binary prefixes (1 KB = 1,024 bytes, not 1,000), which is why a "500 GB" hard drive shows up as ~465 GB in Windows — the OS reports in base-1,024 but the drive is labeled in base-1,000. A 500 × 10⁹ byte drive ÷ 1,073,741,824 = 465.7 binary GB. This is not a defect; it's two different conventions using the same unit names.

Frequently Asked Questions — Conversion Calculator

Drive manufacturers label storage in decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes). Operating systems like Windows report in binary gibibytes (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). A 500,000,000,000-byte drive ÷ 1,073,741,824 = 465.7 binary GB. You're not being shortchanged — both numbers describe the same physical storage, just using different definitions of "GB". macOS switched to reporting in decimal GB in OS X 10.6, which is why the same drive shows 500 GB on a Mac and 465 GB on Windows.
A US gallon is 3.78541 liters; a UK (Imperial) gallon is 4.54609 liters — the UK gallon is about 20% larger. This matters most for fuel economy: a car rated at 30 MPG in the UK actually uses considerably less fuel per mile than a 30 MPG US rating, because the UK MPG number is based on the larger Imperial gallon. The same goes for recipes: a UK recipe asking for "1 pint" means 568 ml, while a US pint is 473 ml.
The rough method: double the Celsius temperature and add 30. At 20°C: 20×2 = 40, +30 = 70°F (actual is 68°F). At 10°C: 10×2 = 20, +30 = 50°F (actual is 50°F — exact!). At 30°C: 30×2 = 60, +30 = 90°F (actual is 86°F). The approximation is within 3–5°F for typical weather temperatures. For body temperature, cooking, or science: use the exact formula °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32.
The three are: US short ton (2,000 lbs = 907.2 kg), UK long ton (2,240 lbs = 1,016.1 kg), and metric tonne (2,204.6 lbs = 1,000 kg exactly). The metric tonne is the international standard for trade and science. In the US, "ton" without a qualifier almost always means the short ton. In the UK and most international shipping contexts, "tonne" means the metric tonne. The 10% difference between short ton and metric tonne is large enough to matter in bulk commodity contracts — always confirm which is intended.
−40 is the only temperature where the Celsius and Fahrenheit readings are numerically equal. Solving °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32 where °F = °C gives: x = (x × 9/5) + 32 → x − 9x/5 = 32 → −4x/5 = 32 → x = −40. It falls below the freezing points of both water (0°C / 32°F) and ethanol (−114°C), and is close to the operating limit of some extreme cold-weather equipment. In practical terms, you'll encounter it in Arctic weather reports and industrial freezer specifications.
Use this formula: L/100km = 235.21 ÷ MPG (US). So 30 MPG = 235.21 ÷ 30 = 7.84 L/100km. Going the other way: MPG = 235.21 ÷ L/100km. Lower L/100km means better fuel economy; higher MPG means better economy — they're inverse of each other. For UK MPG, use 282.48 instead of 235.21 because the UK Imperial gallon is larger. A European car rated at 6.5 L/100km converts to 235.21 ÷ 6.5 = 36.2 MPG (US).
