What Is a Body Fat Calculator?
A body fat calculator estimates the percentage of your body weight that consists of fat tissue. Unlike BMI — which uses height and weight and can't tell muscle from fat — body fat percentage gives a more direct picture of body composition. Two people can weigh exactly the same and have BMIs of 26 while one carries 15% body fat and the other carries 30%.
This calculator uses the US Navy circumference method, developed by Hodgdon and Beckett and published by the US Department of Defense. It requires only a flexible tape measure and takes about two minutes. The measurements feed into logarithmic equations that predict body fat within ±3–4 percentage points of lab-grade methods like DEXA scans for most adults — accurate enough for tracking progress and setting targets.
How to Take Measurements Accurately
Measurement consistency matters more than absolute precision. Taking measurements at the same time of day, with the same tape tension, produces far more useful tracking data than trying to get a perfect first reading.
- Height — measure without shoes, standing straight against a wall
- Neck — measure at the narrowest point, just below the larynx (Adam's apple). Keep the tape horizontal and don't compress the skin.
- Abdomen (male) — measure at the navel (belly button) level, not the narrowest point. Keep breathing normal — don't suck in.
- Waist (female) — measure at the narrowest point between ribs and hips, typically about an inch above the navel. Exhale naturally before reading.
- Hip (female) — measure around the widest point of the buttocks, keeping the tape horizontal all the way around.
The US Navy Body Fat Formula
All measurements are converted to inches before the formula runs. The logarithmic structure was chosen because the relationship between circumference measurements and body fat is not linear — it flattens at higher body fat levels:

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) publishes the most widely used body fat classification system for adults. Note that "Obese" here refers to excess fat relative to lean mass — it doesn't map directly to BMI obesity thresholds, and the two measures often disagree:

Lean Mass vs Fat Mass — Why Both Numbers Matter
Body fat percentage alone doesn't tell you how much tissue of each type you're carrying. That's where lean mass and fat mass come in. Two people at 20% body fat can have very different absolute amounts of muscle depending on their total weight:

Here's a useful way to frame a goal: the 82 kg male in the formula example (19.3% BF, lean mass 66.2 kg) would need to reach a body weight of 77.8 kg to hit 15% body fat — assuming lean mass stays constant. That's a fat loss of 4.2 kg (9.2 lbs), derived by fixing lean mass at 66.2 kg and back-calculating the target weight at 15% BF. The difference in scale weight (4.2 kg) equals the fat to lose.
5 Ways to Use Your Body Fat Result
- Set a lean-mass-preserving fat loss target, not just a scale goal. The 82 kg male example (19.3% BF, lean mass 66.2 kg) reaching 15% BF needs to lose 4.2 kg of fat while keeping lean mass constant. If scale weight drops to 77.8 kg and body fat re-tests at 15%, the goal is met. If scale drops 4.2 kg but body fat only falls to 17%, some muscle was lost along the way.
- Retest every 4–6 weeks using the same conditions. Body fat doesn't change week-to-week in ways the Navy method can reliably detect. Monthly retests at the same time of day, with the same tape, give you a meaningful trend line rather than noise from daily water fluctuation.
- Track the gap between body fat % and healthy range. For a male at 26.1% (one row above the average/obese threshold), the gap to the top of "Average" (24%) is 2.1 percentage points. At 82 kg, that's about 1.7 kg of fat to lose to cross that threshold — a concrete, achievable near-term target rather than a vague aspiration.
- Use it to verify your BMI reading makes sense. BMI can't distinguish muscle from fat. A muscular male at 82 kg and 175 cm has a BMI of 26.8 — technically "overweight" — but may have a body fat of 13% (Athletes category). Body fat percentage confirms or challenges what BMI suggests. When the two disagree, body fat is the more informative number.
- Don't mistake accuracy for precision. The Navy method carries a ±3–4 percentage point error range. A result of 19.3% actually means somewhere between 15.3% and 23.3%. Use it for direction (am I trending toward or away from my target category?) rather than treating it as a clinical diagnosis. NIH recommends combining multiple body composition metrics for the most useful health picture.
