What Is a CGPA Calculator?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average — a single number that summarizes academic performance across every semester completed so far, on a 10-point scale used by many universities worldwide. This calculator handles the three numbers students actually need: SGPA (one semester's grade point average), CGPA (the cumulative figure across all semesters), and the percentage equivalent that many forms and applications still ask for.

The three numbers build on each other. SGPA comes from a single semester's courses and credits; CGPA comes from combining every semester's SGPA, weighted by how many credits each semester carried. Get the weighting wrong — treating a 12-credit semester the same as a 22-credit one — and the CGPA comes out wrong even if every individual SGPA was calculated correctly.

The SGPA and CGPA Formulas

Both formulas are a weighted average — SGPA weights by course credits within one semester, CGPA weights by semester credits across all semesters:

CGPA = 608.1 ÷ 73 = 8.3301, usually rounded to 8.33. Notice this isn't a simple average of the four SGPAs (which would be 8.331 — coincidentally close here, but only because the credit loads happen to be similar across semesters). If one semester carried far more credits than the others, the simple average and the credit-weighted CGPA would diverge more noticeably.

Converting CGPA to Percentage

The most widely used conversion multiplies CGPA by 9.5. Some universities instead use a straight ×10 multiplier. Neither is universally "correct" — check what your specific board or university publishes:

The gap between the two methods widens as CGPA rises — at CGPA 6.0 the two conventions differ by 3 percentage points (57% vs 60%), but at CGPA 9.5 they differ by nearly 5 (90.25% vs 95%). For anything going on an official transcript or application, use whichever formula your institution's own examination handbook specifies, not just the more common one.

CGPA vs GPA (4.0 Scale) — Rough International Equivalence

Students applying to universities that use the US-style 4.0 GPA scale often need an approximate equivalence. There's no single official conversion — credential evaluators typically go through percentage first, then map percentage bands to a 4.0 range. These bands are commonly cited but approximate, not a fixed formula:

6 Things to Know About CGPA

  • Credits matter as much as grades. An O grade (10 points) in a 2-credit elective adds only 20 grade points to your total, while a B+ (7 points) in a 4-credit core course adds 28 — the core course affects your SGPA more even with a lower grade.
  • Later semesters don't get extra weight by default. In the standard formula, a Semester 4 SGPA of 8.9 counts exactly as much per credit as a Semester 1 SGPA of 8.125 — CGPA doesn't automatically reward recent improvement unless your specific university's policy says otherwise.
  • An F grade drags CGPA down harder than a low pass. Since F carries 0 grade points, a failed 4-credit course contributes zero points while still counting in the credit total — worse for your average than if that credit slot simply didn't exist.
  • Recovering from one bad semester takes more than one good one. Bringing a 6.5 CGPA (after several semesters) up to 8.0 with one strong semester of similar credit load isn't mathematically possible — the more semesters already completed, the smaller the effect any single new semester has.
  • CGPA-to-percentage multipliers genuinely differ by institution. Using ×10 instead of the correct ×9.5 (or vice versa) on an 8.33 CGPA changes the reported percentage from 79.14% to 83.3% — a 4-point gap that matters on scholarship or job applications with percentage cutoffs.
  • A single low-credit course rarely sinks an otherwise strong semester. One C grade (5 points) in a 1-credit lab, alongside four other courses averaging A grades, barely moves the overall SGPA — credit-weighting protects against small courses having outsized effects.

CGPA measures performance on a 10-point scale weighted by course and semester credits; percentage measures it on a 0–100 scale, typically based on marks or exam scores directly. They're related but not identical — converting between them (commonly CGPA × 9.5) is an approximation used for forms and applications that ask specifically for percentage, not a recalculation of the underlying marks.
Multiply each course's credit hours by its grade point, add those up, then divide by the total credit hours for the semester. For five courses worth 4, 3, 4, 3, and 2 credits with grades A+, A, B+, O, and B: (4×9 + 3×8 + 4×7 + 3×10 + 2×6) ÷ 16 = 130 ÷ 16 = 8.125.
Every semester completed so far, cumulatively — that's what the "C" in CGPA stands for. Unlike a current-year GPA some systems track separately, CGPA never resets and never drops old semesters, which is exactly why one weak early semester continues to pull down the average even years later, though its influence shrinks as more credits accumulate on top of it.
It depends heavily on the institution and what you're using it for. Many employers and graduate placement programs treat 7.0+ (roughly 66.5% under the ×9.5 conversion) as a common eligibility cutoff for a wide range of recruiters, while competitive higher-education programs and scholarships often look for 8.0 or above. There's no single universal threshold — check the specific cutoff listed by the program, company, or scholarship you're targeting rather than assuming a general number applies.
Treat it as a widely accepted approximation, not a certified equivalence. The ×9.5 formula became a common convention for converting grade averages to percentages and has since been adopted informally by many institutions, but it doesn't perfectly reconstruct the exact percentage a student would have scored under direct marking — it's a conversion convention, not a mathematical identity. For anything with real stakes (visa applications, official transcripts), use the percentage your institution's own examination department certifies.
An F grade carries 0 grade points but still counts its full credit weight in the denominator, so it pulls the average down without contributing anything to offset it — worse than simply having fewer total credits. Most universities require repeating and passing the failed course, after which many replace the F with the new grade in CGPA calculations going forward, though whether the original F stays on the transcript as a record varies by institution's academic policy.
