What Is a GPA Calculator?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average — a number between 0.0 and 4.0 that summarizes your academic performance across all courses in a semester or program. It's calculated by converting each letter grade to a numeric point value, weighting it by the number of credit hours that course carries, and dividing the total by credits attempted.

Most US colleges and universities use the 4.0 scale, where an A or A+ equals 4.0 and an F equals 0.0. The weighting by credit hours is what separates GPA from a simple average of grades — a 4-credit science class has more impact on your GPA than a 1-credit elective, because it contributes four times as many quality points.

The GPA Formula — How It Actually Works

Every GPA calculation follows the same weighted average formula. Here's the exact math this calculator uses, with a worked example:

The 4.0 Grade Point Scale

The standard US scale assigns the same point value to A and A+ (both 4.0), while using 0.3-point steps for plus/minus grades. A small number of institutions don't award plus/minus grades at all — every A is a flat 4.0 and every B is a flat 3.0. Check your school's registrar if you're unsure:

Semester GPA vs Cumulative GPA — The Difference

Semester GPA covers only the courses in that term. Cumulative GPA covers your entire college career — every course ever attempted. The two often differ, and here's what that means in practice:

Semester 2 in this example produced a 3.60 GPA — a strong semester. But cumulative GPA only moved from 3.22 to 3.41 because 30 credits of history now dilute the effect of any single 15-credit semester. That's the math behind why it takes many good semesters to meaningfully raise a low cumulative GPA from freshman year.

How One Course Affects Your GPA

The further along you are, the smaller the impact of any single course — because your existing credit history dilutes it. For a student at 3.00 GPA with 45 credits, a single new 3-credit course shifts the needle only modestly:

5 Ways to Use Your GPA Calculation

  • Track whether you're above the 2.0 federal aid threshold. Federal financial aid (Pell Grant, student loans) requires maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress, which typically means staying above 2.0 cumulative GPA. If you're near that boundary, calculate exactly where a bad grade would put you before dropping or withdrawing from a course.
  • Set a realistic target and back-calculate required semester performance. The example student at 3.41 GPA with 30 credits needed a 3.68 semester GPA to reach 3.50 cumulative.   • Understand what a course withdrawal does. Withdrawing before the deadline usually means "W" on your transcript — no grade points earned, no credits counted. This doesn't lower your GPA, but it doesn't help it either. Staying and earning a C (2.0) at 45 credits drops GPA by only 0.063. Failing the same course drops it 0.188. Whether to withdraw depends on which outcome is more likely.
  • Check graduate school GPA requirements before applying. It depends on what you're using it for. For staying enrolled and keeping federal financial aid, 2.0 is the floor at most schools. For competitive graduate programs, 3.0 is typically the minimum and 3.5+ makes you a strong candidate. For medical or law school, admitted students typically average 3.7–3.9. For the job market, a 3.5+ is often when employers notice it on a resume — below that, many college graduates simply leave it off after a few years of work experience replace it.
No — a W doesn't affect GPA calculation because it contributes zero quality points and zero attempted credits to the GPA formula. It does appear on your transcript, and multiple W's can raise questions from graduate admissions committees or employers about your course completion pattern. The financial aid side is a separate issue: if you withdraw from enough credits to fall below half-time enrollment, your aid eligibility may be affected even if your GPA is fine.
Semester GPA is just that semester's weighted average — for the worked example, Semester 1 was 3.22 and Semester 2 was 3.60. A perfect semester. With 60 existing credits, the math gets harder: 3.0 × 75 − 150.0 = 75.0 needed in 15 credits = 5.0 GPA — impossible on the 4.0 scale.
