What Is a Date Calculator?

A date calculator finds the number of days between two dates, computes a future or past date by adding or subtracting days, and identifies what day of the week any date falls on. These three operations cover the most common date math needs — deadline tracking, contract terms, project planning, age calculations, and event countdowns.

Date arithmetic looks simple but has several non-obvious wrinkles: months have different lengths, leap years add a day every four years (with exceptions), and business day counts require skipping weekends. This calculator handles all three modes automatically, showing results in years, months, weeks, days, business days, weekend days, and total hours simultaneously.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Date Difference — pick a start and end date to see the gap between them in every unit at once. Check "Include end date" to count the final day (useful for rental periods and event durations).
  2. Add / Subtract — enter a starting date and a number of days. Toggle between Add and Subtract. Quick preset buttons (+7, +30, +60, +90, +180, +365) handle the most common jumps without typing.
  3. Day of Week — enter any date, past or future, to see the weekday, ISO week number, quarter, and day of the year.
📌 Include end date: By default, the distance from May 1 to May 3 is 2 days (counting May 1 and May 2 as elapsed days, arriving May 3). Checking "Include end date" makes it 3 days — counting May 1, 2, and 3 all as full days. Rental periods, court deadlines, and billing cycles each use different conventions — check which applies to your situation.

How Date Difference Is Calculated

Under the hood, date difference uses the Julian Day Number — a continuous count of days from a fixed reference point. Subtracting one Julian Day Number from another gives the exact number of days between two dates, regardless of month lengths or leap years:

Date difference (days) = JulianDay(end_date) − JulianDay(start_date) Worked example — May 1, 2023 to November 15, 2023: JulianDay(2023-11-15) − JulianDay(2023-05-01) = 198 days → 0 years, 6 months, 14 days → 28 weeks and 2 days → 143 business days (Mon–Fri, excluding weekends) → Total hours: 198 × 24 = 4,752 hours Business days = count of Mon–Fri days between the two dates (weekends excluded). Weekends = Total days − Business days.

Calendar Days vs Business Days

Calendar days count every day including Saturday and Sunday. Business days count only Monday through Friday. The gap between them matters for anything involving office hours — contract notices, check-clearing periods, regulatory filings, and shipping estimates all typically run on business days.

Note that 2024 has 104 weekend days (52 Saturdays + 52 Sundays) and 262 business days. These figures don't include federal holidays — counting "business days" in a legal or financial context often means subtracting public holidays on top of weekends. This calculator counts Mon–Fri as business days; if your use case excludes holidays, subtract them manually from the business days result.

Leap Years — The 4-Year Rule and Its Exceptions

A standard year has 365 days; a leap year has 366. Adding an extra day every four years keeps the Gregorian calendar aligned with Earth's actual orbit (approximately 365.2422 days per year). The rule has two exceptions that catch most people off guard:

Leap year rules (all three conditions): 1. Divisible by 4 → candidate leap year 2. BUT if divisible by 100 → NOT a leap year 3. Adding and Subtracting Days — Common Scenarios

The add/subtract mode answers questions like "what date is 90 days from now?" or "what was the date 60 days ago?" — common in contract law, subscription billing, medical follow-up schedules, and project deadlines. Here's what adding common day counts to March 15, 2024 produces:

Many legal and financial time limits are expressed in calendar days, not business days — which means weekends and holidays count toward the deadline. Miscounting by even one day can void a legal filing, trigger a penalty, or forfeit a right. Here are common examples:

5 Practical Tips for Date Calculations

  • Jan 15, 2020 → Jul 4, 2024 spans exactly 1,632 days. That's 233 weeks and 1 day, or 4 years, 5 months, and 19 days, or 1,167 business days, or 39,168 hours. The same gap looks different depending on which unit fits the context — use the result that matches how the other party is counting.
  • "30 days" and "1 month" are not the same. 30 days from January 31 lands on March 1 (or 2 in a leap year). "1 month" from January 31 typically means February 28 (or 29) — the last day of February. Contracts should specify which they mean; this calculator uses calendar days when you enter a number, not calendar months.
  • Leap day edge cases matter for annual events. If you were born on February 29, 2000 (a leap day), your "birthday" only technically exists every four years. In non-leap years, most countries treat February 28 or March 1 as the legal birthday — but laws vary. The next leap years after 2024 are 2028, 2032, and 2036; 2100 is not a leap year.
  • ISO week numbering can cross year boundaries. December 31, 2024 falls in ISO Week 1 of 2025, not Week 52 or 53 of 2024 — because the ISO week starts on Monday and January 1, 2025 is a Wednesday.   • Famous dates as a mental calibration check: September 11, 2001 was a Tuesday. The Apollo 11 moon landing (July 20, 1969) was a Sunday. January 1, 2000 (Y2K) was a Saturday. July 4, 1776 — the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted — was a Thursday. Run these through the Day of Week mode to verify — if a calculator gets a well-known date wrong, it's not computing correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions — Date Calculator

Calendar days count every day, including weekends. Business days count only Monday through Friday. 30 calendar days is always 30 days regardless of which weekdays they fall on. 30 business days is typically 6 weeks of weekdays — about 42 calendar days, depending on which day you start. This calculator shows both in the Date Difference result. For contracts and legal notices, always check which type of day is specified.
The Gregorian calendar adds a second exception to the 4-year rule: years divisible by 100 are not leap years, unless they're also divisible by 400. So 1900 was not a leap year, 2100 won't be, 2200 won't be, 2300 won't be — but 2400 will be. The year 2000 was a leap year because it's divisible by 400. This triple-rule keeps the calendar accurate to within one day over about 3,000 years.
The exact solar year is approximately 365.2422 days. The Gregorian calendar averages 365.2425 days per year (365 + 97 leap years per 400-year cycle = 146,097 days ÷ 400 = 365.2425). For most practical date calculations, a year is 365 days in a non-leap year and 366 in a leap year. Using 365.25 (the Julian calendar average) is less accurate for long spans.
Thursday. Enter July 4, 1776 in the Day of Week mode above to confirm — it falls in Q3, ISO Week 27, and day 186 of the year (1776 was a leap year).
It depends on what you mean by "3 months." Calendar math treats 3 months as same-day-next-month, three times: March 31 + 3 months = June 30 (since June doesn't have a 31st). This calculator's Add/Subtract mode uses calendar days — for 3 months, enter 90 or 91 days as an approximation. For exact month-based calculation, use the date three months later: if today is March 15, "3 months later" is June 15. If the end month is shorter, the date snaps to the last day of that month.
ISO week numbering defines Week 1 as the week containing the first Thursday of the year, and weeks always start on Monday. January 1, 2025 is a Wednesday — the week containing it (Monday Dec 30, 2024 through Sunday Jan 5, 2025) has its Thursday on January 2, so it's Week 1 of 2025. That means December 30 and 31, 2024 are both in ISO Week 1 of 2025, even though they're in the calendar year 2024. This can cause confusion in manufacturing and logistics systems that use ISO week references.
