What Is a Zodiac Calculator?

A zodiac calculator determines your astrological sign from your date of birth. There are two major zodiac systems: the Western zodiac (also called the tropical zodiac), which assigns a 12-sign cycle based on the calendar month and day you were born, and the Chinese zodiac, which assigns one of 12 animals based on your birth year in a repeating 12-year cycle.

Western Zodiac — All 12 Signs with Dates

The Western zodiac divides the year into 12 periods, each associated with a constellation the Sun appeared to pass through (from Earth's perspective). The dates shift slightly year to year due to leap years and the Earth's axial precession, but the ranges below are the standard modern boundaries:

Chinese Zodiac — All 12 Animals

The Chinese zodiac follows a 12-year cycle, with each year assigned to one animal. Unlike the Western system, the Chinese New Year starts in late January or February (not January 1), so people born in January or early February may belong to the previous year's animal. The Four Elements — Fire, Earth, Air, Water

Western astrology groups the 12 signs into four elements, with three signs each. The element is considered a core part of a sign's temperament — not the full story, but a useful organizing framework:

What Is a Cusp Sign?

A "cusp" refers to a birthday that falls near the boundary between two zodiac signs — typically within 2–3 days on either side. Popular examples include Aries-Taurus (April 19–21), Gemini-Cancer (June 19–22), and Scorpio-Sagittarius (November 20–23). Some astrologers argue that people born on cusps carry traits of both adjacent signs; others maintain that you can only have one sun sign determined by the exact moment of birth.

• The Western zodiac is based on seasons, not constellations. Due to axial precession (a 26,000-year wobble in Earth's tilt), the zodiac constellations have shifted roughly one full sign since the system was codified in ancient Greece. Aries season now corresponds roughly to when the Sun is actually in Pisces constellation. The tropical zodiac used in Western astrology is locked to the seasons (spring equinox = Aries), not the stars — so "Sun in Aries" is a seasonal, not astronomical, statement.
• There are technically 13 constellations the Sun passes through, not 12. Ophiuchus, the "serpent bearer," sits between Scorpio and Sagittarius and the Sun spends about 18 days in that region. The Babylonians deliberately excluded it when formalizing the 12-sign system around 500 BCE to keep the zodiac aligned with their 12-month calendar.
• The Chinese zodiac year doesn't start January 1. Chinese New Year falls between January 21 and February 20 depending on the lunar calendar. Someone born on January 15, 2024 is technically a Rabbit (2023's animal), not the Dragon that 2024 brought in on February 10. • Your "sign" in popular culture is actually just your sun sign. A full natal chart in Western astrology includes placements for the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto — all in different signs at the moment of birth. Your "moon sign" (which sign the Moon was in at birth) is considered equally or more important than the sun sign for describing emotional nature. Sun sign astrology, the version in newspaper horoscopes, is a 20th-century simplification.
• The zodiac system spread from Babylon through Greece, then to Rome and beyond. The 12-sign system was largely developed by Babylonian astronomers around 700–500 BCE.
