Grading scales, category weights, and rounding policies vary by school, instructor, and course syllabus. This calculator uses the standard weighted-average method and a common US letter-grade scale as defaults. Always check your actual syllabus for the exact weights and grading scale your instructor uses before relying on this for a real decision.

What Is a Grade Calculator?

Most courses don't grade everything equally — homework might count for 20% of the final grade, quizzes for 15%, a midterm for 25%, and the final exam for the remaining 40%. A grade calculator takes those weights along with your actual scores and works out the single overall percentage (and letter grade) that comes out of combining them.

This tool does two things. "Calculate My Grade" adds up everything you've already got scores for. "What Do I Need?" runs the math in reverse — lock in the categories you've already completed, and it tells you the score required on whatever's left to hit a target grade. That second question is usually the more useful one, especially the week before a final exam.

How to Use This Calculator

The Weighted Grade Formula

The math is a weighted average — every category's score counts in proportion to how much of the final grade it represents, not equally:

Notice the final exam alone (91%) is higher than the overall grade (86.05%) — because the midterm and quizzes pull the average down, and they're locked in regardless of how well the final goes. This is exactly why "what do I need on the final" questions matter more once most of the semester's weight is already spent.

The Letter Grade Scale

This is the standard 13-tier scale used by most US high schools and universities, though some institutions use a simpler 5-letter version without plus/minus grades:

An 86.05% — the worked example above — falls in the 83–86% band, which is a B. One extra point on any category, enough to push the total past 87%, would have been the difference between a B and a B+, worth 0.3 more GPA points on the standard 4.0 scale. Grading scale conventions in US education are tracked at the aggregate level by the National Center for Education Statistics, though individual schools set their own exact cutoffs.

A Full Worked Example: What Do I Need on the Final?

Take the same course, but stop before the final exam. Homework, quizzes, and the midterm are locked in at 60% of the total weight combined:

With homework, quizzes, and the midterm averaging 82.75% across 60% of the grade, a 90% overall final grade needs a 100.9% on the final exam — impossible without extra credit. That's not a discouraging result, it's a useful one: it tells you exactly where the realistic ceiling sits before you spend a week studying for a target you can't actually reach.

Converting Your Grade to GPA Points

Report cards and transcripts often show a GPA rather than a raw percentage, using the letter-grade-to-points mapping from the scale above. A semester with several courses averages those points, weighted by credit hours the same way individual assignments get weighted within one course — which is the same underlying math this calculator already runs, just one level up.

How Much Weight Distribution Matters

Two students with the identical four scores (88%, 82%, 79%, 91%) can land on meaningfully different overall grades depending purely on how the syllabus weights each category:

6 Things to Know Before You Calculate

  • A high-weight category with a mediocre score hurts more than a low-weight category with a bad one. A 60% weight at 91% contributes 54.6 points; a 10% weight at 40% only costs you 4 points off the maximum — where the weight sits matters more than any single score.
  • Weights that don't sum to 100% still work, but check why first. If your categories only add up to 90%, either something's missing from your syllabus reading, or the remaining 10% covers something like attendance or participation you haven't scored yet.
  • Extra credit doesn't fit neatly into a weighted average. Most syllabi treat extra credit as added points to a specific category's numerator, not a new weighted category of its own — check how your instructor structures it before entering it here.
  • "What Do I Need?" can return an impossible number, and that's useful information. A required final score over 100% means the target grade is out of reach through the final alone — worth knowing before, not after, a week of stress.
  • Rounding policies differ by instructor. An 86.05% might round to 86% (standard) or get bumped to 87% under a "half-point rounds up" policy — a small difference that occasionally crosses a letter-grade boundary.
  • Dropped lowest scores change the weight, not just the average. If a syllabus drops your lowest quiz score, that quiz's original weight typically redistributes across the remaining quizzes — recalculate with the adjusted weights, not the original ones.

Multiply each category's weight by your score in that category, add the results together, then divide by the total weight. Four categories at 20%/88%, 15%/82%, 25%/79%, and 40%/91% work out to (17.6 + 12.3 + 19.75 + 36.4) ÷ 100 = 86.05%.
Take your locked-in weighted points so far, subtract that from (target grade × 100), then divide by the final's weight. If homework, quizzes, and the midterm already total 4,965 points across 60% weight, and the final is worth 40%, hitting a 90% overall requires (9,000 − 4,965) ÷ 40 = 100.9% on the final — which flags the target as unreachable without extra credit.
