What Is a Concrete Calculator?
A concrete calculator estimates the volume of concrete needed for a project — expressed in cubic yards, cubic feet, or cubic meters — and converts that volume into bag counts or ready-mix order quantities. This one supports four common shapes: slabs (driveways, patios, floors), strip and spread footings, round columns and deck posts, and cast-in-place stairs. It also applies an adjustable waste factor so your order accounts for spillage, uneven subgrade, and pour variability.
Getting the volume right before ordering matters. Running short mid-pour forces a second pour, which creates a cold joint — a structural weak point where two separate pours meet at different hydration stages. Ordering too much costs money. A well-sized order finishes with a modest amount left over: enough to fill any low spots without significant waste.

The cutoff point is roughly 1 cubic yard. Below that, bagged concrete from a home improvement store is usually more practical and cost-effective for most DIYers. Standard Slab Thickness Guide
Thickness is the single input that most affects concrete volume. A 6-inch slab uses 50% more material than a 4-inch slab of the same footprint — every extra inch matters. Here are the standard thicknesses for common applications, per American Concrete Institute (ACI) guidelines:

Waste Factor — How Much Extra to Order
No concrete project pours to exactly the calculated volume. Subgrade isn't perfectly flat, forms flex slightly under load, some concrete sticks to tools and mixing equipment, and measurement variance accumulates across large areas. Standard industry practice is to add 5–15% above the calculated volume:

5 Practical Tips for Concrete Projects
- Always order ready-mix for anything over 1 yd³. The math is straightforward: for the 10×10×4 slab example (1.23 yd³), 80-lb bags cost about $403 vs $185 for ready-mix delivery — a $218 savings before you count the labor of mixing 62 bags by hand. For a 20×10 ft driveway slab (2.47 yd³), the bag cost tops $800 and the labor is substantial. Ready-mix delivery is the right call at that scale.
- Match thickness to use — not to budget. A 3-inch driveway slab will crack under vehicle loads. Most residential codes require at least 4 inches for driveways. Going from 4 to 5 inches adds only 25% more material (and cost) but adds roughly 50% more load capacity. The extra inch at a 20×10 ft driveway is about 0.62 yd³ more concrete — at $150/yd³ ready-mix, that's $93 extra for a substantially more durable result.
- Prepare the subgrade before you calculate. If your subgrade has low spots, you'll use more concrete than the calculator predicts — and those areas won't be the right thickness either. Grade and compact the subgrade, then measure actual depth at several points before placing your order. Low spots of 1–2 inches across a 200 sq ft slab can add 10–20 ft³ of unexpected volume.
- Build forms at the right height, not by eye. Form height directly controls slab thickness. A form set 3.5 inches high when you intended 4 inches reduces your volume by 12.5%. On a 20×20 ft slab, that's 6.7 ft³ — nearly a quarter yard³ — less concrete than ordered, which may leave you short at the end. Measure form height at multiple points with a tape measure before pouring.
- Don't pour concrete on frozen ground or below 40°F air temperature without precautions. Freshly poured concrete needs to stay above 40°F (4°C) for at least 7 days to cure properly. Below this, hydration slows substantially and the concrete may never reach its design strength. The ACI recommends cold-weather protection measures including insulating blankets or heated enclosures for pours when temperatures are likely to drop below 40°F within 24 hours of placing.
