What Is a Tile Calculator?

A tile calculator figures out how many tiles you need to cover a given floor or wall area, after accounting for the inevitable waste that comes from cutting tiles to fit edges, corners, and obstacles. Order too few and you risk a dye-lot mismatch when you go back for more. Order far too many and you're overpaying by $100–$300 on a typical room.

The core math is simple — room area divided by tile area — but the waste factor is where most DIY estimates go wrong. Straight-lay patterns lose about 5% to edge cuts. Diagonal and herringbone patterns lose 15% or more because tiles on the diagonal intersect walls at angles that produce far more wasted triangle cuts. This calculator applies the correct waste percentage for each lay pattern automatically.

📌 Measure twice: Measure room length and width at their longest points, including any bump-outs or alcoves you plan to tile. For walls, measure height × width of each wall section. Don't subtract doorways from a floor measurement — that area is small and the tiles cut for door transitions count toward waste anyway.

The Formula This Calculator Uses

How Much Waste to Add? A Pattern-by-Pattern Guide

The waste percentage isn't guesswork — it reflects how many cut pieces a particular pattern produces. Straight tiles aligned to walls produce one cut per edge; diagonal tiles produce cuts on every wall intersection at 45°, generating far more unusable triangle offcuts. 5 Tips Before You Buy Tiles

  • Always buy from the same dye lot. Tile colors shift between production batches — sometimes noticeably. Check the dye lot number on each box and buy all your tiles from the same lot at once. If you need to return to buy more later, the new batch will likely look slightly different. The 10% waste buffer exists in part so you have enough from one lot to complete the job.
  • For a 120 sq ft room at $3.50/sq ft tile cost, waste adds $42 at 10%. That's the cost of ordering 132 tiles vs 120. Budget waste into your material cost from the start: multiply your room area by (1 + waste%) to get the sq footage to price. At $3.50/sq ft, the 120 sq ft room costs $462 in tile material with 10% waste included — not $420.
  • A diagonal lay on the same 120 sq ft room needs 138 tiles vs 126 for straight lay — 12 extra tiles. The pattern choice alone costs an extra box of tiles. Factor this in when deciding between a standard grid and a more decorative diagonal before your installer quotes you a quantity.
  • Keep 5–10 spare tiles from your project. Cracked or chipped tiles happen years later — dropped items, settlement cracks, plumbing work. If the tile is discontinued (common within 2–3 years), finding a match is nearly impossible. Break the L-shape into two rectangles, measure each separately, and run the calculator for each section. Add the tile counts together, then add your waste buffer to the total. Don't apply waste separately to each section — calculate the combined tile count first, then multiply by (1 + waste%). This approach also works for rooms with bay windows, alcoves, or any non-rectangular footprint: divide into simple rectangles, sum the areas, and calculate once.
For doorways: yes, include them. The opening is small and the tile transitions cut for doorways are waste anyway — excluding them understates your needs without saving meaningful money. For built-in cabinets (islands, vanities): subtract only if the cabinets are already in place and you're tiling around them. If you're tiling first and installing cabinets on top (which most tile installers recommend for a cleaner look), tile the full floor area.
Because you can't buy 0.3 of a tile. If the formula says you need 131.7 tiles, you must buy 132 — there's no way to purchase a fraction. Rounding down to 131 would leave you one tile short of completing the job. The CEILING function (always round up to the next whole number) is the mathematically correct approach for any quantity-of-units problem where partial units can't be purchased.
