What Is an Age Calculator?

An age calculator finds the exact span of time between a date of birth and today (or any target date you choose). Beyond the simple "years old" answer, it breaks your age into months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds — which comes up more often than you'd expect in contexts like insurance eligibility verification, legal documentation, retirement planning, and medical records where the precise date difference matters.

This calculator also shows your next birthday countdown, zodiac sign, the day of the week you were born, and the next US legal age milestone from your current age — all computed from a single date of birth entry.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your date of birth — use the date picker or type in MM/DD/YYYY format
  2. Set the "As Of" date — defaults to today; change it to calculate age on any past or future date
  3. Click "Calculate My Age" to see your age in years, months, days, plus six additional time units
  4. Scroll down the results for zodiac sign, next birthday, day of week born, and next US legal milestone
📌 Retroactive dates work too: Set the "As Of" date to any date in the past to find how old someone was on a specific historical date — useful for genealogy, legal documents, or checking age eligibility at a past event.

How Age Is Calculated

Age calculation isn't simple subtraction of years — it requires counting actual calendar months and days to handle month-length variation correctly:

Step 1: Compare year, month, day components separately years = ref_year − dob_year months = ref_month − dob_month days = ref_day − dob_day Step 2: Borrow if needed If days < 0: add days_in_prev_month to days; subtract 1 from months If months < 0: add 12 to months; subtract 1 from years Step 3: Total units (from total calendar days elapsed) total_days = (ref_date − dob_date).days total_weeks = total_days ÷ 7 total_hours = total_days × 24 total_minutes = total_hours × 60 total_seconds = total_minutes × 60 Worked example — DOB: March 15, 1990 / As of: January 10, 2040 (example reference date) years: 2040 − 1990 = 50 months: 1 − 3 = −2 (borrow) → borrow: months += 12 = 10; years −= 1 = 49 days: 10 − 15 = −5 (borrow) → borrow: days += 31 (December has 31 days) = 26; months −= 1 = 9 → Final: 49 years, 9 months, 26 days total_days = 18,198 total_weeks = 2,599 total_hours = 436,752 total_minutes = 26,205,120

Your Age in 6 Units — What Each One Tells You

The six time-unit breakdowns are more than novelty numbers. Each shows up in real contexts:

UnitExample (DOB Mar 15, 1990 → Jan 10, 2040)When It's Used
Years + months + days49 years, 9 months, 26 daysOfficial age on legal documents, passports
Total months597 monthsLoan terms, infant development (pediatric charts use months to age 2)
Total weeks2,599 weeksGestational age, some insurance waiting periods
Total days18,198 daysDrug dosage intervals, prison sentences, contract durations
Total hours436,752 hoursRare medical or aerospace contexts; useful as a reality-check number
Total minutes / seconds26,205,120 / 1,572,307,200Fun milestone posts; also used in some programming date-diff operations

Total months (597 for this example) is derived by multiplying years × 12 and adding the remaining months: 49 × 12 + 9 = 597. As a cross-check, someone born July 4, 2000 would have lived 14,434 total days as of that same January 10, 2040 reference date — the same formula produces 39 years, 6 months, 6 days, or 2,062 total weeks. Total days (18,198) is the raw calendar count from March 15, 1990 to January 10, 2040 — every leap day included.

US Legal Age Milestones

Age thresholds determine eligibility for dozens of legal rights and obligations in the United States. The calculator shows your nearest upcoming milestone — here's the full list it draws from:

Zodiac Signs by Birthday

Western astrology assigns a zodiac sign based on which constellation the sun was in at the time of birth. The 12 signs each cover roughly 30 days, with dates that shift slightly depending on the source (the calculator uses the most widely cited ranges):

SignDate RangeElement
♑ CapricornDec 22 – Jan 19Earth
♒ AquariusJan 20 – Feb 18Air
♓ PiscesFeb 19 – Mar 20Water
♈ AriesMar 21 – Apr 19Fire
♉ TaurusApr 20 – May 20Earth
♊ GeminiMay 21 – Jun 20Air
♋ CancerJun 21 – Jul 22Water
♌ LeoJul 23 – Aug 22Fire
♍ VirgoAug 23 – Sep 22Earth
♎ LibraSep 23 – Oct 22Air
♏ ScorpioOct 23 – Nov 21Water
♐ SagittariusNov 22 – Dec 21Fire

Someone born March 15 — like the worked example — falls under Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20). Anyone born March 21 onward is Aries.

Leap Year Birthdays — February 29

Leap years add a 29th day to February every 4 years — with one exception: century years (1900, 2100) are not leap years unless also divisible by 400 (so 2000 was a leap year, 2100 won't be). Between 1990 and 2040, there are 13 leap years: 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024, 2028, 2032, 2036, and 2040.

For people born on February 29, this calculator uses February 28 in non-leap years. So a person born February 29, 1996 turns 30 on February 28, 2026 (or February 29 when available) — and by our January 10, 2040 example reference date, they would have had 10 actual February 29 birthdays in their lifetime (2000 through 2036), at an age of 43 years, 10 months, and 12 days, with 16,021 total days elapsed.

5 Practical Uses of an Age Calculator

  • Verify Medicare eligibility. Medicare enrollment begins in the 7-month window around your 65th birthday: 3 months before, the month of, and 3 months after. For a March 15, 1990 birth, that window opens December 15, 2054. Missing it means delayed coverage and potential late-enrollment penalties. The "As Of" feature lets you check exactly where in that window any date falls.
  • Calculate age for legal documents retroactively. Wills, insurance claims, and property transfers sometimes require an age "as of" a specific past date — not today. Enter the relevant date in the "As Of" field to get the exact age at that point. Courts and insurers use the same calendar-day counting method this calculator applies.
  • Check pediatric age in months. Infant development charts, vaccination schedules, and growth percentile tables use age in months up to 24 months, then in months and years to age 5. The total months figure — 435 months for the main example — would show as 9 or 17 months for a baby, matching clinical documentation standards. Reference: CDC Growth Charts
  • Cross-check age at historical events. Set the "As Of" date to any past date to find someone's age at a specific event. A person born June 3, 1944 was 21 years, 2 months, and 6 days old on the day of the Apollo 11 moon landing (July 20, 1969) — not simply "21" as year-only arithmetic would suggest.
  • Time remaining to Social Security milestones. Full retirement age for people born in 1960 or later is 67 per SSA guidelines. Someone born March 15, 1990 — 49 years and 9 months old as of our January 10, 2040 example reference date — has 5,543 days (about 15 years and 2 months) until their 65th birthday, and roughly 17 years until full retirement age. Knowing the exact day count helps plan around the 3-month early enrollment window.

Frequently Asked Questions — Age Calculator

Because total months counts every complete month from birth to today, while "years, months, days" shows the remainder. For someone who is 36 years and 3 months old: total months = 36 × 12 + 3 = 435. The two numbers are consistent — they describe the same age from different angles. Total months is useful in contexts like loan amortization or clinical records where the year/month breakdown would be inconvenient.
In most non-leap years, leap day birthdays are observed on February 28 in the US and UK, or March 1 in some other countries — legal interpretation varies by jurisdiction. This calculator uses February 28 in non-leap years. Someone born February 29 gets an actual February 29 birthday only once every four years (with the standard century exceptions) — so across 40 years of life, they will have had roughly 10 real Feb 29 birthdays, not 40.
Yes — that's exactly what the "As Of" date field is for. Enter their date of birth, then set the "As Of" date to whatever past (or future) date you need. The calculator returns the exact age at that point using the same calendar-day counting method used in legal documents and medical records. This is useful for genealogy research, estate administration, or checking eligibility at a past event.
Yes — every leap day adds one extra day to the total. Across the 50-year span in our worked example (1990 to 2040), there are 13 leap years, each contributing an extra day to the total. For someone born March 15, 1990, the 18,198 total days to our January 10, 2040 example reference date includes all 13 of those leap days. Whatever birth date and current date you enter, your own total day count will be higher than a simple 365×years calculation would predict, by however many leap days fall within your actual span.
It depends on your birth year. For anyone born in 1960 or later, full retirement age is 67. For those born between 1943–1954, it's 66. The SSA raised the full retirement age gradually in two-month increments for birth years 1955–1959 (66 years and 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 8 months, 10 months respectively). You can claim as early as 62, but benefits are permanently reduced — by up to 30% for someone with a full retirement age of 67. Waiting until 70 increases your benefit by 8% per year beyond full retirement age.
Not legally or medically, but it comes up more than you'd expect — in genealogy records, hospital birth certificates, and personal curiosity. The calculator uses the Gregorian calendar's standard day-of-week algorithm, which is the same method Excel, Python's datetime module, and virtually every modern calendar application uses. Before the Gregorian calendar was adopted globally (by different countries at different times between 1582 and 1923), dates would compute differently — something to note for birthdays before the 20th century.
