What Is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from your height and weight that places you in one of several weight categories — underweight, normal, overweight, or obese. The World Health Organization (WHO) established these cutoffs as a population-level screening tool, not an individual diagnosis. A large majority of US adults fall in the overweight or obese range according to CDC National Survey data.

The reason BMI caught on so widely is that it requires only two inputs — height and weight — and costs nothing to measure. Doctors, researchers, and insurers use it as a first-pass filter to flag potential weight-related health risks. What it cannot do is tell the difference between a pound of muscle and a pound of fat, which is where its well-known limitations come in.

The BMI Formula

There are two versions of the formula depending on whether you're using metric or imperial measurements — both produce identical results:

The calculator uses the metric formula internally. When you enter imperial measurements, it converts to metric first, then computes. Both paths produce the same number — 26.6 for this example — so there's no rounding difference between unit modes.

WHO BMI Categories for Adults

These are the standard adult BMI ranges used by the WHO, CDC, and most US healthcare providers. Children use different age- and sex-specific BMI percentile charts — this calculator is for adults 18 and older:

Where BMI Falls Short

BMI has one structural problem: it sees weight but not what that weight is made of. A 6'0" (183 cm), 225 lb (102 kg) competitive athlete and a sedentary person of identical height and weight will both get a BMI of 30.5 — Obese Class I — despite having completely different body compositions and health profiles. This isn't a flaw in the math; it's an inherent limitation of using weight alone as a proxy for body fat.

Four groups where BMI is frequently misleading:

  • Highly muscular individuals — Dense muscle mass can push BMI into the overweight or obese range for people with low body fat. A 196 cm (6'5") athlete at 118 kg (260 lbs) gets a BMI of 30.7, which technically reads as Obese Class I.
  • Older adults — People lose muscle mass with age (sarcopenia). An elderly person with a BMI of 22 might have a healthy weight but above-normal body fat percentage, because muscle has been replaced with fat without changing total weight.
  • Short individuals — BMI tends to underestimate adiposity in shorter people and overestimate it in taller people, due to the square of height not scaling perfectly with body fat across all heights.
  • Pregnant women — Standard BMI thresholds do not apply during pregnancy. Pre-pregnancy BMI is used for gestational weight gain guidelines instead.
Better alongside BMI: Waist circumference adds useful information BMI misses. The NIH classifies elevated risk as waist circumference over 40 inches (102 cm) in men and over 35 inches (88 cm) in women, regardless of BMI category.

5 Practical Ways to Use Your BMI Result

  • Use it as a starting point, not a verdict. A BMI of 27 doesn't mean you're unhealthy — it flags that weight relative to height is above the normal range and warrants a closer look, ideally with a doctor who can also check blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose.
  • Track change over time, not just the number. A BMI that moves from 31 to 28 over 12 months reflects about 10–12 lbs of weight loss for someone at 5'9" — real progress, even though both numbers are still in the overweight or obese range. The direction matters as much as the current position.
  • Pair it with waist circumference. Research consistently shows waist-to-height ratio and waist circumference are better predictors of metabolic risk than BMI alone. If your BMI is 26 but your waist is under 35 inches (women) or 40 inches (men), your risk profile looks better than BMI suggests.
  • Understand the healthy range for your height specifically. For a 5'4" person, the healthy range spans 108 to 146 lbs — a 38-lb window. For a 5'10" person, it's 129 to 174 lbs, a 45-lb window. These are real, calculated figures, not one-size-fits-all guidance.
  • Don't compare your BMI to someone else's directly. A 5'2" woman and a 6'0" man both having a BMI of 24 means very different body compositions. BMI only compares you to yourself across time — not across people of different heights, sexes, or builds.

Frequently Asked Questions — BMI Calculator

The WHO defines healthy adult BMI as 18.5 to 24.9. Below 18.5 is underweight; 25.0 to 29.9 is overweight; 30.0 and above is obese. These cutoffs apply to most adults regardless of sex. Some healthcare organizations use different thresholds for people of Asian descent — overweight at 23.0 and obese at 27.5 — because metabolic risk appears higher at lower BMI values in those populations.
Not necessarily. BMI measures weight relative to height but can't distinguish muscle from fat. Athletes, people with large frames, and those who are very fit often land in the overweight category despite low body fat. A better gauge: if your waist circumference is under 35 inches (women) or 40 inches (men), blood pressure is normal, and bloodwork looks good, a slightly elevated BMI on its own carries less clinical significance. Talk to your doctor — that context matters far more than the number alone.
The formula is identical — BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m) — and the WHO thresholds are the same for both sexes. That said, women typically carry a higher percentage of body fat than men at the same BMI, and men tend to carry more muscle. So a BMI of 25 in a woman often reflects more body fat than the same BMI in a man of similar build. Body fat percentage testing gives a more sex-specific picture when that distinction matters.
Less so. As people age, they typically lose muscle mass and gain fat mass even when total weight stays flat — a process called sarcopenia. Someone in their 70s with a BMI of 22 might have a normal number but above-average body fat. Research also suggests slightly higher BMI ranges (roughly 23–27) may be associated with lower mortality in adults over 65, compared to the standard 18.5–24.9 cutoff. If you're over 60, discuss your ideal weight target with your doctor rather than relying solely on the standard WHO table.
Aim for the healthy range (18.5–24.9) as a long-term target, but break it into smaller milestones. Even a 5–10% reduction in body weight produces measurable improvements in blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol — you don't have to reach a "normal" BMI to benefit from losing weight. For a 5'9" person weighing 210 lbs (BMI 31.1), losing 10% brings weight to 189 lbs (BMI 28.0) — still overweight by BMI, but with real health gains along the way.
The same formula is used, but children's BMI is interpreted differently. Instead of fixed cutoffs, children's results are plotted against age- and sex-specific growth charts called BMI-for-age percentiles.
